Nu har det bekräftats: Microsoft Edge: Making the web better through more open source collaboration Så blir det: ”We also expect this work to enable us to bring Microsoft Edge to other platforms like macOS.” Dessutom kommer den framtida Edge, byggd på Chromium, att släpps för alla Windows-versioner som stöds, det vill säga Windows 7, 8.1 och 10. Microsoft kommer att bidra till att utveckla Chromium – och har redan börjat att göra så.

Zac Bowden skriver på Windows Central att Microsoft kommer att byta ut EdgeHTML, renderingsmotorn i Edge, och framgent bygga på Chromium. Nu är Chromium mer än en renderingsmotor, det är en hel webbläsare, med renderingsmotorn Blink. Hur Microsofts webbläsare kommer att se ut och bete sig ”på ytan” återstår att se. Vad den nya webbläsaren skall heta är okänt, men dess arbetsnamn är Anaheim, enligt samma artikel. En fråga är hur Microsoft kommer att göra med tillägg. Tillägg för Edge hämtas i Microsoft Store, och det har hållit vissa utvecklare borta, bland dem Electronic Frontier Foundation, som inte har släppt sina tillägg för Edge. Utbudet av tillägg för Edge är mycket mindre än det för Chrome, så att ge tillgång till Chrome Web Store skulle öppna för fler tillägg i Microsofts nya webbläsare, och därmed kanske fler användare. (Fyra procent använde Edge i november.) En annan tanke som dök upp när jag läste om bytet till Chromium är att det öppnar för fler system än Windows. Edge finns redan för de mobila systemen Android och IOS. Edge för Android är byggd på Chromium, och Edge för IOS använder systemets WebKit. Så varför inte en Microsoft-webbläsare på Ubuntu och Mac OS? Med Bing som förvald söktjänst, så klart. Microsoft har ännu inte bekräftat uppgifterna, vad jag har sett. Bing har nu fått för sig att https://www.videolan.org/vlc/ kan vara en skadlig webbplats. Vad det beror på vet nog inte ens Microsoft, ty WDA har inget att anmärka på installationsfilerna, och Edge har inget emot att öppna webbplatsen. Detsamma gäller Chrome med Windows Defender Browser Protection.
